Price Is Right, The Ride

If any of you have been seeing souvenir pics of TPIR posted around Facebook and MySpace lately, it's part of a new thing we've been working on for fans who wait in line to see our live tapings. We've code named the project "Price Is Right, The Ride", because the pics remind us of the kind you buy after you ride a roller coaster at an amusement park. It's all part of our desire to add something extra to the waiting-in-line-for-8-hours experience. (Waiting in the line can be half the fun of attending a taping, though, so don't let the long wait make you afraid to come. People have great conversations and meet new life-long friends in line all the time.)

We did it with the audiences for the two shows we taped this past Monday. We had a big green screen set up out in line, and people posed in front of it like they were spinning the wheel. Then they were able to go online and download a pic of themselves that looks like they were spinning the wheel on TPIR, along with a "Watch for me on The Price Is Right on September 21, 2009" message on the bottom. There was also a Cliff Hangers pic you could choose, and I think... a Plinko.

Anyway, Adam Sandler is hard at work on all of it, and there'll be an announcement when it's all done and ready for daily use. Stay tuned!

Anyone have a pic on their MySpace or Facebook that I could link to so people can see it? Didn't want to post anyone's pic without their permission...

  2. Hey Drew! We saw the show this week Monday, Tuesday, and Wed. Finally Wed morning, Barry was chosen to Come On Down--you signed his shirt on stage in the midst of him finding out he was playing for a car (he won!!!!) Anyhow, you're right, we became buddies with tons of people in line. In fact Barry was in the showcase showdown with Amanda, who is now a friend of mine on Facebook. So yes, you can link my Facebook page to your blog!!!

Thanks Drew, we have the best memories from this whirlwind week!

  3. hmm.... my assistant (who is on facebook) clicked the link and it took her to her own facebook page. Hmm... flickr maybe? I dunno. We'll work it out.

  4. That's novel :)

It reminds me of going to the state fair up here in Minnesota. One of our local news stations would set up a green screen for kids to play weatherman, and get their picture taken.

  5. That is too cool! I have taken in the line now for six different tapings and didn't win a dime. You're right, waiting in line for "The Price is Right" is like getting in line to ride your favorite roller-coaster. I'm looking forward to whatever surprises are in store.

    I love roller-coasters BTW...

  6. See, this is the kind of thinking that can bring the show (which is an institution of sorts) into several more decades of fans. Brilliant idea. As the role of TV in our culture and entertainment choices continues to evolve, this gets the show more conversational, and gives more people ownership of it. Totally the right thing to do.

  7. Care to address the question as to why Roger is no longer with the show? If you love him so much, surely you could have saved his job.

  8. Sounds like a great viral marketing campaign in addition to a nice bonus for fans... way to think outside the box.

  9. She needs to use the public facebook link... the one she posted is the private facebook link you can give to friends.

  10. Wouldn't it be funny if you made a cameo in one of Adam Sandler's movies and you would totally kick kick his ass, just like what Barker did? I hear a People's Choice Award!

  11. Wow, one of the best ideas I have ever heard! Ok, so when I'm eighteen, this idea better still be going strong! ;)

  13. No I don't. It's not even my place to discuss it. Although I was as surprised as anyone else. Went to his going-away party. Hugged him. Hugged his family. He said kind things about me in his toast. Bob was there. You could tell how much they care for each other. I have nothing but warm feelings about Roger. Know he has a production company and is out there pitching. Hope he gets another show on soon. :)

  14. This is definitely a good thing. I had visited the show 3 times while Bob was the host, and ended up having to wait around for hours on end to get in the studio - sometimes not even getting into the studio!

While yucking it up with everybody in line is fun, there's only so much you can talk about for 6-36 hours! And if you don't get in, it's a nice souvenir and a good way to trick your friends. lol

  15. Drew thanks for the backstage access to the show. You are wonderful for providing us with pictures and stories! We 'civil' fans at the 'other' fansite sure would love to see more sneak-peek pics of the season 38 set! (especially the turntable/home base).

  16. Drew thanks for taking the time to answer our questions! Hopefully you can help be honest with us. Maybe you could tell us about why certain games haven't been getting played on the show like 3 Strikes and others? What games have been officially retired since you took over?

  17. Hey Drew,

I've Been watching Price for as long as I can remember and I think you're doing a great job! I love the moments of random spontaneity that have occured this past season! Bits like you running through the turntable as it spins...playing around with a handheld camcorder during the show...it's good stuff!

It's good to see some things becoming more creative. I enjoyed the showcase where Rich had to read his whole copy in time or else get dunked in a dunk tank...one of the funniest showcases I've seen in a long time.

It's been nice seeing some more variety in some of the tech prizes, such as Macs and whatnot (though I'm still a PC user...). I'm in my 20's and I must say that my favorite prize offered has got to be the restored Mustangs! The coolest prize EVER on Price! I love when you guys try to give those things away.

Congrats on starting your third year as host and keep up the great work! I look forward to watching.

Be blessed and have a great weekend,

    Joe

  18. So will the CBS pages be a little more lenient about taking photos in line? They make it very clear it's not allowed and I wouldn't want them to remove their snazzy red jackets before they'd kick my ass!

  19. I have to do this, I can't resist it:

"GRRR-eetings ladies and gentlemen! Welcome aboard "Price is Right--The Ride!" Please remember that there is only one seat belt, and that seat belt goes across both passengers. Once you are in the seat with the seat belt buckled, pull down on the lap bar until you are secured. Please keep all arms, legs, and video cameras inside the car at all times. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your ride!"

    :-D

  20. Neat idea. These interactive things are all the rage - baseball stadiums have them now, lots of places. And it gives the folks on line something to do, which can't be a bad thing, as I'll bet the wait is fairly long.

And here's a guess...might the folks who pick the contestants be looking these pics over to see who's acting happy, excited, not nervous in front of a camera? Not a bad idea if you're not doing it.

  21. I would like to tell you that I think you are a tremendous talent, Drew, and I think you are doing a GREAT job hosting TPIR. I love "The Drew Carey Show" and "Whose Line Is It Anyway?". I think the new changes you are making to TPIR are positive ones. The modernization of the TPIR set has been along time coming, and I am all for it. It's important to keep things fresh and alive, and you guys have done so while still maintain a classic feel. Well done! To the purists, I say, learn to live with change...it's good and it's healthy. Great job, Drew! Thanks for all your hard work!

  22. Gosh, I didn't know Adam Sandler did coding. *rimshot*

Nice things like this make the experience extra special. You don't see stuff like "Regis Philbin, The Ride" do you. Then again, perhaps that's just as well. :)

  23. Well, Bob...

  24. I confess! I just don't get TPIR. Your viewpoint of all things "ordinary" on TDCS is sooo missed! I understand having a steady gig is important to keeping the homefires burning but hope we will eventually get to see you in another brilliant sitcom!

Any chance we can lure you to do a standup gig in SL sometime? My buddy DoubleDown Tandino and I could arrange one if ya want (maybe even streaming to multiple sims). I know, what's the point of playing to less than a hundred people? Well, you once started out that way in RL didn't you?? I think you would have plenty of humerous commentary about SL!!
